Salifu Dagarti Foundation (SDF) helps people in the rural areas of West Africa to fight against poverty and disadvantage.

70% of Ghana’s poor people live in rural areas.
Half of them are women and children.
They have limited access to basic services, safe water, electricity and telephone. Poverty is worst among food crop farmers 6 out of 10 of whom are poor.

Women are the worst off. They work at least twice as many hours as men, spend about three times as many hours transporting water and goods and carry about four times as much in weight on their heads and back. Yet they are much less likely than men to receive education or health benefits or have a voice in decisions affecting their lives.

Rural poverty also affects the aged, sick, the disabled and people with HIV/AIDS. Most of them have no means of support and no way to pay for medical care.

Poverty means high numbers of infant deaths, undernourished families, lack of education for their children and other deprivations.

Salifu Dagarti Foundation believes in empowering people to help themselves.
